We offer drug and alcohol counseling for San Jose residents, with in-person appointments in Sacramento and online sessions by secure video. Work with William Schneider, LAADC-CA, ICADC, to address substance use and build support for recovery in the format that works for you.
You may be drinking more than you intended, using drugs to get through the week, or finding it difficult to stay sober after treatment. You may also be unsure how serious the problem is. Counseling gives you time to discuss what is happening, how it affects your life, and what you want to change.
Sessions focus on your substance use, the situations that make change difficult, and steps you can take between appointments. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis or a complete recovery plan. Learn more about our online substance abuse counseling in California.
The work depends on what you are facing now. Some people need help changing their drinking or drug use. Others have stopped using and want support with cravings, relationships, or returning to everyday responsibilities.
Talk through patterns involving alcohol, opioids, prescription medications, stimulants, or marijuana. Individual addiction counseling can address the situations that lead to use, attempts to cut back, and the consequences you want to prevent.
Plan for difficult evenings, social occasions, contact with people you used with, or stress that makes returning to use more likely. After a return to substance use, sessions can help you examine what happened and reassess the support you need. You can also discuss loss of interest or pleasure during recovery and how it affects daily life.
Substance use can strain marriage and relationships, leaving partners and family members unsure how to respond. Couples counseling and family counseling provide ways to discuss trust, boundaries, and the effects of substance use on the household.

You can attend counseling in person in Sacramento or join online from San Jose. During the initial consultation, discuss which format fits your schedule and needs. For video sessions, you will need an internet connection and a private place to talk.
Counseling does not replace medical withdrawal care or emergency treatment. The consultation is also an opportunity to discuss the type of support you need.
You can seek counseling while you are still working, studying, or caring for your family. Keeping up with responsibilities does not mean your concerns about alcohol or drugs are unimportant.
A conversation may be useful when:
These experiences are reasons to ask for help, not a diagnosis on their own. You can describe what concerns you without needing to decide what label applies.
Concerned about withdrawal? Stopping alcohol suddenly after prolonged heavy drinking can be dangerous. Seek medical advice before stopping when dependence or withdrawal is a concern. NIAAA explains why medical help may be needed.

William Schneider, LAADC-CA, ICADC, has more than 19 years of experience in substance abuse recovery, including work in nonprofit, private, and medication-assisted treatment settings. He works with San Jose residents through in-person appointments in Sacramento and online counseling.
William takes time to understand your history, your relationships, and the circumstances surrounding your substance use. His approach draws on cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, solution-focused methods, and DBT techniques, with the work adapted to your needs.
You might need to talk through mixed feelings about stopping, understand a pattern you keep returning to, or find a way to handle conflict without using. Sessions make room for an honest discussion of those concerns and specific changes you can try.
Family involvement can also be discussed when it is appropriate. You can ask about William’s background and approach during the initial consultation before arranging ongoing sessions.

You do not need to have everything figured out before asking for help. Start with a free 15-minute phone conversation about what has been happening and what you would like to change.
